Don't leave money on the table

99% of people are wastefully giving up free miles / points whenever they book a holiday for themselves or their extended families. These miles or points could translate to FREE business class or even first class tickets for you in the future, if you play your cards right.

This blog will show you the easiest ways to pick up free miles from doing things that you would be doing anyway, at no extra cost.

1.) Credit Card points
2.) Airline Frequent Flyer Program
3.) Hotel Rewards Program
4.) Other Referral partners (Airbnb / car rental etc)

Let's tackle the big one first, and #1 on the list: credit cards. If you are not maximising your daily spend with a credit card that has good points conversion to airline miles, you are doing it wrong. As long as you are buying daily necessities and not overspending on things you can't afford, there is really no disadvantage to use credit cards over cash.

With a card like Maybank 2 Cards Amex, each Ringgit you spend earns you 1 air mile with either Malaysia Airlines Enrich, Cathay Pacific Asiamiles,  or Singapore Airlines Krisflyer. Cathay Pacific Asiamiles or Singapore Airlines Krisflyer would be the best places to park your miles, but this is a topic for another day.

If you can swipe RM25,000 a year on your credit card instead of using cash, this would translate to a free return business class ticket on Singapore Airlines to Istanbul or Dubai after 4 years. The cash cost of this ticket is approximately RM15,000, which is a pretty good return on RM100,000 of spend, given that you need to spend the money anyway.

4 years might seem like a long time, but hey, it's totally free AS LONG AS YOU PAY OFF YOUR CREDIT CARD DEBT ON TIME. The bolded part cannot be emphasised enough. If you are delinquent in paying off your credit card then any points earned are essentially pointless (pun intended) as there is a very real cost to them.

Next article we'll talk about frequent flyer programs and airline alliances, which can open up free business class lounge access even when flying in economy class, an amazing perk to have.
